Abstract: Designed around a thick copper base, and lightweight set of nickel-plated aluminum fins, the VA476 certainly looks as though it has good breading.

Initial performance results are rather low, but this is mainly due to the ambient temperature ranges. The real test of the VA476 will be just how well it performs when we look at the rise above ambient temperature results. Will it be able to outperform the standard stock Intel heatsink or will it just match it? Read on and find out.

A lot of heatsinks have a hard time breaking the barrier which Intel set themselves. In the case of the Globalwin VA476 we can see that it comes in just under the stock cooler levels by about 1.5-2 degrees. Considering the fan on the VA476 is just 15mm thick, the performance of the heatsink could probably be raised a few degrees with an upgrade to a 25mm thick fan. Moving to a 38mm fan would guarantee an increase in cooling performance, but the noise levels are just too high to justify it for more than a few minutes of testing here or there.

While the Globalwin VA476 tests to levels just about at that of the stock Intel heatsink, the cooler does have a few really good points to consider. The high aspect ratio fins, and indeed fin density, mean that this heatsink can probably offer up extra cooling performance with a larger sized fan. The copper base offers good heat spreading to the outer edges and in general the design looks pretty good. However, given the test results a little more work may be needed to reach the right goals.
