Abstract: The Dark Rock TF has an upside-down pyramid sort of profile, measuring 140x165mm at the top and 98x102mm at a height of 22mm above the CPU. It ships with two identical 135x25mm SilentWings fans that operate 1400RPM and move upwards of 68CFM at 1.85mm/H2O

Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

BeQuiet's Dark Rock TF heatsink is equipped with two 135mm PWM fans that exhaust downward. The fans draw power from separate 4-pin fan headers so a short Y-splitter is included. The 130mm tall heatsink uses six 6mm diameter copper heatpipes bent into a large "G" shape. The heatpipes pass through two horizontal cooling fin stacks, the first 131x140x35mm in size, the second measures 98x64x27mm. In each case, aluminum fins measure 0.3mm thick and are spaced ~2.0mm apart. The bottom of the second fan is elevated 58mm above the CPU socket. Note the rubber pads on both sides of the upper fin stack for the fans to rest against.

The dark nickel plated heatpipes are soldered to the nickel plated copper base plate and smaller cooling fin section, while the upper set of cooling fins are swaged in place. Six heatpipes intersect the top set of aluminum fins in a straight row, four heatpipes intersect the bottom row of fins. Wire fan clips hold both 140mm fans in place upon small rubber vibration absorbing bumpers.

The leading and trailing edges of each cooling fin have a shallow concave profile with small notches, this forms a plenum behind/in front of the fans. The nickel plated copper base of the BeQuiet Dark Rock TF heatsink measures 40x43.5mm in size and is between 2-5mm thick. The aluminum cap on the top-side 8mm thick and supports the mounting brackets. Aluminum bezels and heatpipe caps have been added for a cleaner visual appearance.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineer's straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axes.

The copper baseplate of BeQuiet's Dark Rock TF heatsink is dark nickel plated and has a smooth machined surface finish. Surface roughness is at or better than ~8 microinches. The base is perfectly flat in one axis and slightly convex in to opposite axis.
