FrostyTech Mk.III Synthetic Thermal Heatsink Test Results
Intel Core i7, Extreme Edition class heatsinks tested at a 200W heat load.
Results based on readings from a 38x38mm copper interface die with 200W heat load on the Intel version of the Mk.III Test Platform. Temperature results listed for each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient temperatures at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

200w thermal test (°c) noise level (dba)
*heatsinks are ranked according to the 200w thermal test results column (rise over ambient temp.). low temperatures with low noise levels are considered best. for reference heatsinks with variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12v) fan test result is included in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside in each specific heatsink review.

frostytech's socket LGA2011 Intel synthetic thermal test platform stresses socket LGA2011/1366 compatible heatsinks with a 200W heat load. Keep in mind that the AMD Integrated Heat Spreader and Intel LGA2011 Integrated Heat Spreader both measure ~38x38mm, so these test results can be extrapolated to AMD processor scenario's as well.

With a 200W heat load applied by the Intel LGA2011/1366 version of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform, the Phanteks PH-TC12LS heatsink was only able to maintain a satisfactory temperature result of 36.4°C over ambient at full fan speed (1800RPM, 43.4dBA).

Slowing the 120mm fan down to 500RPM proved to be too much for the heatsink to cope with, it failed this test. Without sufficient airflow passing through the painted aluminum fins, test temperatures rose to +72.3°C over ambient, indicating the heatpipes had stalled.

Where sub-74mm tall LGA2011 heatsinks are considered, the Raijintek Pallas topped the list with a result of 22.2°C over ambient. The Pallas was followed by the Reeven Steropes at 29.4°C over ambient and Phanteks PH-TC12LS.

Conclusions

On the whole, the thermal performance of the low profile Phanteks PH-TC12LS heatsink is disappointing. I suspect the same issues with painted aluminum fins, adhesively bonded fin-to-heatpipe joints and general high thermal joint resistance that plagued the Phanteks PH-TC12LS are at play here, as well.

If we consider the Phanteks PH-TC12LS thermal performance against other sub-75mm tall (low profile) heatsinks, things aren't that much better for the PH-TC12LS cooler. In all three heatsink reference charts the PH-TC12LS rus about 10°C to 14°C hotter than the best performing, comparably sized low profile heatsink tested to date. Given this test data, you'd be better off looking at the Raijintek Pallas, or one of the other low profile heatsinks we've listed... Phanteks need to go back to the drawing board with this heatsink.
