Phanteks PH-TC12LS Low Profile Heatsink Review
Phanteks PH-TC12LS Low Profile Heatsink Review

Abstract: In this review Frostytech is testing the Phanteks PH-TC12LS heatsink, a top-down low profile heatsink that stands 74mm tall and weighs in at 500grams. The PH-TC12LS has a footprint about the size of the 120mm PWM fan that rests atop its black-painted aluminum fins.

Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

Phanteks' PH-TC12LS heatsink has a footprint of 120x129mm, however the CPU base plate is located off-center slightly (center point is ~50mm from one side and ~80mm from the other). The single 120mm PWM fan draws power from a standard 4-pin PWM motherboard header. Each painted aluminum fin measures 0.4mm thick and is spaced 2.0mm apart from the next. The cooling fins are elevated 28mm above the socket for clearance.

The top-down design of the Phanteks' PH-TC12LS heatsink means it only stands 74mm tall. The end of each heatpipe is capped for aesthetic reasons. Six, 6mm diameter nickel plated copper heatpipes run the length of the 19mm thick aluminum fin stack before making a 180-degree bend down towards the nickel plated copper heat spreader. The fan attaches to the heatsink body through a pair of metal brackets which create a small 2mm plenum behind the fan.

At the base of the Phanteks PH-TC12LS heatsink we find a nickel plated copper heatspreader that measures 35x42.5mm in size and is between 2-5mm thick.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineer's straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axes.

The nickel plated copper base of the Phanteks PH-TC12LS heatsink has a machined surface finish that is very smooth, surface roughness is at or better than ~8 microinches.

However, the plane of the base is warped. When compared against a straight edge, the base surface is slightly concave in the axis parallel to the heatpipes and slightly convex in the opposite axis.
