FrostyTech Mk.III Synthetic Thermal
Heatsink Test Results
Intel
Core i7, Extreme Edition class heatsinks tested at a 200W heat
load. Results based on readings from a 38x38mm copper
interface die with 200W heat load on the Intel version of the Mk.III
Test Platform. Temperature results listed for each heatsink were
calculated by determining the rise over ambient temperatures at time
of test. Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here. |

200w thermal
test (°c) |
noise level (dba) |
*heatsinks are ranked according to the 200w thermal
test results column (rise over ambient temp.). low temperatures with low
noise levels are considered best. for reference heatsinks with
variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12v) fan test result is included
in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside in each specific
heatsink review. |
Frostytech's
socket LGA2011 Intel synthetic thermal test platform stresses socket
LGA2011/1366 compatible heatsinks with a 200W heat load. Keep in mind that the
AMD Integrated Heat Spreader and Intel LGA2011 Integrated Heat Spreader both
measure ~38x38mm, so these test results can be extrapolated to higher wattage
AMD processors as well.
With a 200W heat load applied by the Intel LGA2011/1366
version of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform, the twin tower Reeven
Okeanos RC-1402 heatsink yields a good result of 18.3°C over ambient with both
its fans running at full speed. Noise output is a moderately loud
54.2dBA.
After reducing the speeds of both fans to 300RPM, the
Okeanos RC-1402 yielded a substantial rise in test temperatures, to 39.4°C
over ambient... below average when faced with a 200 Watt
heat load.
Structurally, the dual tower Reeven Okeanos RC-1402
heatsink is quite similar to the Reeven Ouranos tower cooler - both CPU
coolers use the same mix of 8mm and 6mm heatpipes to conduct heat away from the
processor. Where the Okeanos RC-1402 obviously differs, is in
cooling surface area and number of fans.
Between the two coolers, the Okeanos RC-1402 exceeds the
other by a significant margin only when fan speed is dropped all the way
down. Not unsurprisingly, the Okeanos RC-1402 has only a small advantage
when its fans are spinning at their full RPM, though noise output is also a bit
higher.
Bottom line, the Reeven Okeanos RC-1402 heatsink offers very good thermal
performance at full fan speed and competitive low noise cooling when the fans are
slowed down a bit. Clearly though, the heatsink reference charts are stacked
with a good many other coolers that manage to squeeze out ahead of this Reeven
heatsink... a point we're tending to associate with the fact that the base
plates on the last three Reeven heatsinks Frostytech has tested have
consistently been somewhat convex.
