Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper
interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the
LGA1155/1156/775 version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature
results listed for each heatsink were calculated by determining the
rise over ambient temperatures at time of test. Information on

Intel processors vary in
power output so FrostyTech tests each heatsink with two thermal loads that
represent the upper limits of current CPU families; 150W and 85W.
With a
150W heat load applied by the Intel LGA1156/1155/775 version of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform, the 151mm tall
Silverstone Heligon HE02 heatsink maintains an unsatisfactory temperature result
of 77.1°C over ambient in the vertical orientation and 69.3°C over ambient in
the horizontal orientation. The HE02 heatsink fails to satisfactorily cope with
a heat load of 150W, regardless of orientation. Please note that Silverstone
rate the HE02 heatsink at up to 95W when passively cooled. To be fair to the
heatsink, 150W is 55W beyond its rated heat capacity.
Silverstone's Heligon HE02 heatsink was next tested
with an 85W heat load, which should be much better suited to its 95W-fanless
rating. Under this test scenario the Heligon HE02 cooler was able to maintain a
poor temperature result of 56.2°C over ambient in the unsympathetic vertical
orientation and a satisfactory temperature result of 44.3°C over ambient in the
horizontal orientation.
Once again, the only heatsink we can really compare the
Heligon HE02 to is the Nofan CR-95C passive cooler; in this case the CR-95C
comes in 19.2°C cooler on the 150W test and 11.6°C cooler on the 85W test.
To sum up, the passive Silverstone HE02 heatsink is
capable of satisfactory cooling in a sufficiently ventilated case, but
only for thermal loads of 95W or less, so long as the
heatsink is in a horizontal orientation
which promotes convective cooling. In all other test scenario's the Silverstone
HE02 proved unsatisfactory. If you plan on using this passive heatsink in a
mid-tower PC chassis, the entire top of the case should be ventilated and the
side panel should have a good deal of air venting as well.
