Results based on readings from a 38x38mm copper
interface die with 125W heat load on the AMD version of the Mk.II
Test Platform. Temperature results listed for each heatsink were
calculated by determining the rise over ambient temperatures at time

before get into the numbers, let's take a moment to
explain what's meant by "Horizontal" and "Vertical" orientation. Unlike forced
air heatsinks, convection cooled heatsinks are very
much influenced by the orientation of their cooling fins. When we say
"horizontal" we mean the heatsink cooling tower is parallel to the horizon -
this is your bog standard heatsink-strapped-to-a-vertical-motherboard,
orientation.
When we say "vertical", that means the cooling tower is
pointing straight up, perpendicular to the horizon - if the bottom of the
heatsink was sitting on a desk in front of you, this would be the vertical
orientation. In these tests the orientation of the heatsink base really isn't
important, it's the position of the whole cooling fin assembly that affects
convection cooling. Not the most eloquent way to classify this, I know... here's
a photo to further clarify the Silverstone HE02's two test positions.
With a 125W heat load applied by the FrostyTech AMD
synthetic thermal test platform, the Silverstone Heligon HE02 heatsink maintains
an unsatisfactory temperature result of 63.6°C over ambient in the horizontal
orientation and 75.5°C over ambient when rotated into the
not-at-all-convection-cooling-friendly, vertical orientation.
Silverstone rate the HE02 heatsink at up to 130W with a
fan, 95W when passively cooled. To be fair to the heatsink, 125W is 30W beyond
its rated heat capacity. In any event, regardless of orientation the Silverstone
HE02 heatsink fails to satisfactorily cope with a heat load of 125W.
The only other completely passive heatsink Frostytech
can compare the Heligon HE02 against is the Nofan CR-95C. The CR-95C
heatsink maintains a temperature 17.5°C cooler
than the Silverstone's HE02's best AMD test result.
