Heatsink Test Results
AMD Phenom
II, Athlon II/64/FX/X2, Sempron class heatsinks
Results based on readings from a 38x38mm copper
interface die with 125W heat load on the K8 version of the Mk.II
Test Platform. Temperature results listed for each heatsink were
calculated by determining the rise over ambient temperatures at time

FrostyTech's 125W synthetic thermal
test results clearly place the Arctic Cooling Alpine 64 Plus heatsink in the
satisfactory class of AMD heatsinks. Given the simple extruded aluminum
construction and 95mm fan, this is hardly surprising. That being said, the
heatsink does offer reasonable temperatures at stock fan speed, but clearly
we're pushing it beyond the design specs considering it's rated for a 100W heat load.
With a 125W heat load applied, the Arctic Cooling Alpine
64 Plus heatsink maintains a satisfactory temperature of 32.8°C over ambient at
default fan speed (2000RPM). Under these conditions it generates a moderately
audible 47.4dBA noise.
When fan speed is reduced to a low of 600RPM, the Alpine
64 Plus is pushed beyond its acceptable design envelope for this thermal load.
At that fan speed the Alpine 64 Plus maintains an unsatisfactory rise over
ambient temperature of 52.2°C, while noise level falls to 29.5 dBA.
Bottom line, the Arctic Cooling Alpine 64 Plus heatsink is
suitable for processors with a thermal design power of 100W or less. At full fan speed the Alpine 64 Plus
runs relatively quietly, Frostytech would suggest limiting its use to AMD socket
FM1 processors or energy efficient chips like the Phenom II 910e series.
