Intel processors vary in power output between single and multi-core models so FrostyTech tests heatsinks with two thermal loads that represent the upper limits of most CPU families; 150W and 85W.

With a 150W heat load applied by the Intel LGA775/1156 version of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform, the Zalman CNPS5X-SZ heatsink maintains a good temperature result of 22.3°C over ambient (54.8dBA noise) at stock fan speed. Slowing the fan to 1400RPM reduces noise levels to 38.1 dBA and causes CPU test die temperature to increase to 30.5°C over ambient.

The Zalman CNPS5X-SZ heatsink was then tested with an 85W heat load. Under this test scenario the CNPS5X-SZ was able to maintain a good temperature result of 13.9°C over ambient at stock fan speed and 19.4°C over ambient at reduced fan speed.

As a heatsink the Zalman CNPS5X-SZ is relatively compact and doesn't occupy all that large of a footprint. This 135mm tall heatsink is able to maintain good temperature results at full speed, but is clearly better suited to the task of sub-95W heat loads.

Given its relatively compact size and light weight, the Zalman CNPS5X-SZ heatsink does well in its class (compared to other 135mm or shorter heatsinks). If heatsink cost is not a deciding factor there are many heatsinks at double or triple the price of the Zalman CNPS5X-SZ to choose from which offer better cooling figures. Where economics and height restrictions come into play, the Zalman CNPS5X-SZ offers up good cooling at moderate noise. It's best tuned to CPUs with a TDP of around 85-95W where its small 90mm fan can run more freely at quieter speeds.
