360° View - Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 Heatsink

The 92mm PWM fan with its white impeller spins at 2000-1500RPM and draws power from a standard 4-pin motherboard fan header. The fan is integrated into the plastic fan shroud so fan swapping is not possible. Four 6mm diameter copper heatpipes rise up through 89mm worth of raw aluminum fins. Each aluminum fin measures 0.4mm thick and is spaced ~1.75mm apart. The heatpipes intersect the fins with a 3mm offset.

The Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 heatsink stands 130mm tall, the bottom-most fin is 31mm above the CPU socket for clearance. The four copper heatpipes are positioned side by side and soldered to the 2-5mm thick copper base plate. Rather than use an aluminum extrusion to support the top of the heatpipes and distribute compressive forces, AC use the spring-steel mounting bracket which is permanently affixed to the heatsink. The bottom 20mm of aluminum fins are vented at the side.

The copper base plate on the Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 measures 30x32mm in size and is supplied with MX-4 thermal compound pre-applied. These dimensions make the base plate much smaller than the AMD IHS... The top perspective illustrates the fan shroud + fan which may need to be unclipped during installation, the staggered heatpipes and geometry of the aluminum fins clearly.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineers straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axis.

The copper base plate of the Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 heatsink has a surface roughness of approximately 32 microinches, which is considered good. The base has a sanded surface finish that is perfectly flat in one axis and very very slightly concave in the opposite.
