Scythe SCRT-1000 Rasetsu Heatsink Review
Scythe SCRT-1000 Rasetsu Heatsink Review

Abstract: Broad processor support, however, is not what makes the Scythe Rasetsu heatsink stand out.... instead it's a mixture of acute and obtuse isosceles triangular voids cut into the leading and trailing edges of the heatsinks aluminum fins.

Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

The 120mm PWM fan spins at 1800-800RPM and draws power from a standard 4-pin motherboard fan header. The manual fan speed controller is not removable. The fan is held by two wire fan clips which are easy to remove for cleaning. Six 6mm diameter copper heatpipes pass through half the aluminum fins in four separate rows, from the center outwards. Aluminum fins measure 0.2mm thick and are spaced ~1.5mm apart. The leading/trailing edges are shaped as previously described, which is quite a novel technique.

Scythe's Rasetsu heatsink stands just 130mm tall but has a footprint of 140mm x 130mm making it rather boxy. The bottom-most fin is elevated 44mm above the CPU socket for clearance. The six heatpipes are soldered together side to side at the base, behind a 2mm thick nickel plated copper heatspreader. The rows of heatpipes intersect the aluminum fins with a 20° skew to the left.

From the bottom the Scythe Rasetsu is a compact little bundle of heatpipes and aluminum fins. The same pattern is mirrored in the bottom of the fins as well. A polished nickel plated copper base plate measuring 47x50mm in size is more than sufficient for any modern Intel or AMD processor.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineers straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axis.

Scythe's Rasetsu heatsink has a surface roughness of approximately 8 microinches, which is considered excellent. The base is made of nickel plated copper which has been stamped out. The base has a very smooth finish and is essentially perfectly flat in both axis.
