Heatsink Test Results
Intel
Pentium D / Extreme Edition & Quad Core class heatsinks tested
at 150W Intel Core 2 Duo / Pentium 4 /
Celeron class heatsinks tested at 85W Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper
interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the LGA775
version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results listed for
each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient
temperatures at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test

The heat output from Intel
processors varies, so Frostytech tests with two thermal values that represent
the upper limits of existing CPU families. With a 150W heat load applied by the
Intel LGA775 version of FrostyTech's
synthetic thermal test platform first, the Thermaltake Frio heatsink maintains
an excellent temperature result of 14.5°C over ambient with both fans operating
at full speed (2500RPM / 62.6dBA noise).
Fan speed
was then universally reduced from 2500RPM to 1200RPM, decreasing noise levels to
38dBA. In this scenario the +1000 gram Thermaltake Frio heatsink held
temperatures steady at a very good 17.8°C over ambient.
Thermaltake's Frio heatsink was then tested on the
Frostytech Mrk.II synthetic thermal test platform with an 85W heat load; akin to
a Core 2 Duo or Core i5 processor. As the integrated heatspreader on an Intel
Core i5 processor is the same size as the CPU test die used for the LGA775
synthetic thermal test platform, the 85W results can be considered indicative of
LGA1156 heatsink performance.
In the 85W
heat load test, the Thermaltake Frio
heatsink easily maintained an excellent 8.8°C rise over ambient temperature with
both fans operating at 2500RPM, and 11.0°C over ambient with both fans quieted
down to 1200RPM.
Frostytech's thermal test results really do paint
a picture of a heatsink almost at odds with itself. The Thermaltake Frio
heatsink is loud with both its' fans spinning away at 2500RPM, but it
also offers excellent thermal performance on both AMD/Intel test platforms.
Comparable heatsinks come in the form of the Noctua NH-D14, Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme and Spire Thermax Eclipse
II. Each achieves similar thermal results but with dramatically lower noise
output. On the downside, the Thermaltake Frio heatsink weighs a ton and the
mounting hardware necessitates using a case that gives easy access to the rear
of the motherboard. If you can live with that, for the best of both
worlds just dial back the fan speed on both 120mm fans as low as it will
go. Recommended.
