applied on the LGA775 version of the Mk.II Test Platform.
Temperature results listed for each heatsink were calculated by
determining the rise over ambient temperatures at time of test.

The heat output from Intel processors varies, so Frostytech
tests with two thermal values that represent the upper limits of existing CPU
families. With a 150W heat load applied by the Intel LGA775 version of FrostyTech's synthetic
thermal test platform first, the Thermaltake Contac 29 heatsink maintains a
great temperature of 18.0°C over ambient (48.0dBA noise) at full fan speed.
The speed
of the 120mm PWM fan on the Contac 29 heatsink was then reduced from 2000RPM to
a quieter 800RPM, decreasing noise levels to 30 dBA. In this scenario
the Contac 29 heatsink held temperatures steady at 27.6°C over
ambient.
Thermaltake's Contac 29 heatsink was next tested on the
Frostytech Mrk.II synthetic thermal test platform with an 85W heat load; akin to
a Core 2 Duo or Core i5 processor. The integrated heatspreader on an Intel Core
i5 processor is the same size as the CPU test die used for the LGA775 synthetic
thermal test platform, so the 85W result can be considered indicative of LGA1156
heatsink performance qualities... in case you hadn't
realized!
In this
test the Thermaltake Contac 29 heatsink maintained a good 11.4°C rise over
ambient temperature at default fan speed, and 16.8°C at its reduced fan speed.
The
results speak for themselves; Thermaltake's Contac 29 heatsink works well for
performance cooling but it's not the absolute best thermal solution in the
reference chart. No
surprise there, Frostytech is comparing the Contac 29 against
202 other Intel heatsinks! ;-)
To be
more specific, the Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme, 3Rsystem iceage 120 Boss II,
Zalman CNPS10X Quiet, Prolimatech Megahalems and Xigmatek DK-S1283
heatsinks all offer similar full-speed noise levels with scaling
performance increases of between 1-4°C under our 150W synthetic test
parameters. As a lower noise CPU heatsink the Contac 29 handles the task quite
well too. Bottom line, a good little tower heatsink for Intel or AMD
processors!
