Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

The 92mm fan on the Core-Contact Freezer 92mm Edition heatsink spins at 2200RPM by default. The supplied fan speed controller can drop that down to 1200RPM if quieter operation is desired. A standard 3-pin motherboard header provides power. Note the AMD K8-style mounting clip attached to the aluminum base block. The rubber fan mounts support the 92mm fan 2mm away from the dimpled aluminum fins. On the bottom base block are short extruded fins for additional cooling.

The heatsink is 122mm tall, and uses four 6mm diameter copper heatpipes to conduct heat to the 91mm tall stack of dimpled aluminum cooling fins. The bottom fin is elevated 32mm for adequate motherboard component clearance. Each fin measures 0.3mm thick and is spaced 2.0mm apart. The aluminum/heatpipe base is 10mm thick.

The base of the Sunbeamtech Core-Contact Freezer 92mm Edition has a machined surface finish, done with a slight ridge texture. The exposed heatpipes make up much of the base, which has an overall area of 45x35mm. Looking at the top of the Core-Contact Freezer 92mm Edition we see the tips of the 6mm diameter U-shaped copper heatpipes. The aluminum fins are roughly 96 x 48mm in size.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineers straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axis.

The Sunbeamtech Core-Contact Freezer 92mm Edition heatsink has a machined base with a surface roughness of approximately ~48 microinches. The manufacturer has purposefully given the surface a distinctive ridged texture during the milling process. The base is perfectly flat in both axis.
