Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper
interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the LGA775
version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results listed for
each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient

Frostytech tests
with two thermal values that represent the upper limits of existing Intel CPU
families. With a 150W heat load applied by the Intel LGA775 version of
FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform first, the Thermaltake BigTyp 14Pro
heatsink maintains a very good temperature of just 18.8°C over ambient (59.7dBA
noise) at full fan speed.
Under similar test conditions and reduced fan speed, the
noise output from the BigTyp 14Pro heatsink levels off at a moderately audible
47.9 dBA, while temperatures rise by ~7°C to 25.2°C over ambient.
Thermaltake's BigTyp 14Pro heatsink was then tested with
an 85W heat load; akin to a Core 2 Duo processor.
In this test the BigTyp 14Pro easily maintains a
temperature of 11.6°C over ambient at 1600RPM, and 14.2°C with the fan at
1000RPM.
The Devil is in the
Details
At full speed the Thermaltake BigTyp 14Pro heatsink suffers from slightly
elevated fan noise, 59.7 dBA. Furthermore, in our tests an occasional rattling
sound from the plastic fan shroud vibrating against the aluminum heatsink fins
was audible. A little bit of tape easily resolves this though. The big 140mm fan
is most at home when rotating at a slow speed of 1000RPM, and under these
conditions the Thermaltake BigTyp 14Pro offers good thermal performance for the
noise (47.9 dBA).
So what does Frostytech make of the BigTyp 14Pro? Well
at first glance it seems obvious there are other heatsinks with better thermal
performance to pick from, CPU coolers offer significantly lower noise levels
too. The crux is that Thermaltake's BigTyp 14Pro heatsink stands only 127mm tall. Assuming a minimum clearance
height of 135mm for sufficient airflow, the BigTyp 14Pro is then on par with the
Xigmatek HDT-SD964, Zerotherm BTF92 OC Ed. and Xigmatek HDT-S983 heatsinks. In height limited situations where a heatsink no higher
than 135mm is required, the available options greatly narrow and Thermaltake's
BigTyp 14Pro cooler is among the best - it's just too bad the fan puts out
nearly 60 dBA at full tilt.
