Abstract: When it comes to high performance heatsinks there aren't a lot of models shorter than 135mm. Oh there are plenty of tower heatsinks with some of the lowest temperatures a PC enthusiast can hope for. Today, Frosty tests the Thermaltake BigTyp 14Pro.

Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

The large 140mm fan on the Thermaltake BigTyp 14Pro heatsink spins at 1000-1600RPM and is illuminated by three blue LEDs. Power is supplied by a 3-pin motherboard fan header. Fan speed can be adjusted manually by an attached fan speed controller. Six 6mm copper heatpipes are packed one next to the other at the base and extend out to two individual aluminum fin arrays. The fin arrays measure 115x70x30mm in size. Aluminum fins are 0.3mm thick, spaced 1.5mm from the next.

The six 6mm diameter heatpipes thread though one set of cooling fins to the base, then back up to another set of cooling fins. It appears like there are actually 12 heatpipes here, but according to documentation it's just 6 very long heat pipes. The bulk of the BigTyp 14Pro heatsink is elevated 55mm above the CPU, the heatsink itself stands 127mm high.

The copper base of the Thermaltake BigTyp 14Pro heatsink measures 40x45mm and is 2.5mm thick over the heat pipes. The surface is mirror smooth and mirror polished, all six heatpipes are soldered to the base.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineers straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axis.

The machined copper base of the Thermaltake BigTyp 14Pro heatsink is perfectly flat in both axis. The copper has a mirror smooth finish, with surface roughness at or better than ~4 microinches, which is excellent. Next up are Frostytech's acoustic heatsink noise level comparisons...
