FrostyTech Mk.II Synthetic Thermal
Heatsink Test Results
Intel
Pentium D / Extreme Edition & Quad Core class heatsinks tested
at 150W Intel Core 2 Duo / Pentium 4 /
Celeron class heatsinks tested at 85W Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper
interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the LGA775
version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results listed for
each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient
temperatures at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test
methodology is available here. |

noise level (dba) |
*heatsinks are ranked according to the 150w thermal
test results column (rise over ambient temp.). low temperatures with low
noise levels are considered best. for reference heatsinks with
variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12v) fan test result is included
in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside in each specific
heatsink review. |
Intel socket 775 processors vary in power output between
single and multi-core models, so FrostyTech tests heatsinks with two thermal
loads that represent the upper limit of each CPU family; 150W and 85W.
With a
150W heat load applied by the Intel LGA775
version of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform, the Ibuypower IBP-Z001
liquid cooling system clearly performs in the Top 5! The Ibuypower IBP-Z001 is
able to maintain a temperature of just 18.0°C over ambient at full fan speed
(61.7 dBA noise), which is excellent if we look past the noise for a moment.
With its 120mm fan slowed down to 800RPM, the thermal solution runs at
a quiet 34.6 dBA, but in this scenario, LGA775 CPU
die temperatures rise to a fairly average result of 32.5°C over
ambient.
The
Ibuypower IBP-Z001 liquid cooling solution was then tested with an 85W heat load
on the LGA 775 test platform. Under these test conditions the CPU test die
average a low 11.6°C over ambient at stock fan speed, and 17.7°C
at the low fan speed setting.
Thermally speaking, the Ibuypower IBP-Z001
self-contained liquid cooling system is an excellent, albeit noisy, solution
when it's 120mm fan is operating at full tilt. In the AMD reference list is
fared very well, in the Intel reference list it placed within the Top 5 best!
However, the quieter the fan operates the lower the performance. At it's
quietest operational level the Ibuypower IBP-Z001 self-contained liquid cooling
system is nearly dead silent, but offers up only average
thermal results.
Installation of Ibuypower's IBP-Z001 self-contained
liquid cooling system isn't difficult, but the user must have a 120mm exhaust
fan port at the back of the case. Furthermore, the CPU socket must be within
about 4" of the back of the case for the relatively short lengths of
Norprene tubing to reach. Those are the only physical caveats we can see
with the IBP-Z001 system. That we can tell, there is no alarm for loss of fluid
or obstructed flow.
Watercooling is generally a complicated affair, but Ibuypower have created a novel
and easy to use self-contained product here which should offer maintenance free
use for at least a couple years. At full tilt Intel users will see
excellent performance, so if noise isn't as much an issue to you, this
self-contained watercooling unit is certainly worth considering.
