FrostyTech Mk.II Synthetic Thermal
Heatsink Test Results
Intel
Pentium D / Extreme Edition & Quad Core class heatsinks tested
at 150W Intel Core 2 Duo / Pentium 4 /
Celeron class heatsinks tested at 85W Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper
interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the LGA775
version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results listed for
each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient
temperatures at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test
methodology is available here. |

*heatsinks are ranked according to the 150w thermal
test results column (rise over ambient temp.). low temperatures with low
noise levels are considered best. for reference heatsinks with
variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12v) fan test result is included
in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside in each specific
heatsink review. |
the heat
output from intel processors varies widely between single and multi-core
processors, so frostytech relies on two thermal values that represent the upper
limits of existing intel cpu families. with a 150w heat load applied by the
intel lga775 version of frostytech's synthetic thermal test platform, the Asus
Triton 77 heatsink maintains a temperature of 27.7°C over ambient. Noise levels
hold steady at 41.2dBA from the 92mm Sunon MagLev PWM fan which spins at
2300RPM.
If we next drop fan
speed to ~700RPM, the Asus Triton 77 yields a 34.8°C rise over ambient for
37.0 dBA noise. This result is a slightly unrealistic test because the PWM
circuitry would not drop fan speed down to the minimum speed when faced with a
heat load of this magnitude... but if you want extra low noise operation it's
good to know what the Triton 77 is capable of.
For the next round of testing the Asus Triton 77
heatsink was tested with an 85W heat load; akin to an Intel Core 2 Duo
processor. In this case the Triton 77 maintained a good 17.6°C rise in
temperature at full fan speed, and at a reduced fan speed 21.5°C over ambient
temperature.
Looking at the results for the Asus Triton 77 heatsink
on both Intel and AMD synthetic test platforms, it's clear the cooler performs
best at stock fan speed. The Sunon MagLev fan generates a moderate 41.2 dBA
noise under these conditions, which is easy to life with. Given the
disappointing results for the Asus Triton 75 heatsink Frostytech reviewed previously,
it's reassuring Asus hasn't completely gotten stuck in a quagmire of poor CPU
cooler designs. The Triton 77 is a nice improvement in performance and
useability.
The bottom line is this; the Asus Triton 77 heatsink is
a good lower noise heatsink for Intel and AMD processors, though not the best in
either category.
