The Heatsink Fan: The 6mm diameter copper heatpipes wrap around
half the copper cooling fins on the NPH-1000
heatsink. We would have expected them to extend around a
little more... but there you have it. The 95mm fan is held in place with four
machine screws to fan mounts soldered directly to the copper fins.
It connects to a standard 3-pin motherboard fan header, or via the
included fan speed controller if you wish to reduce noise
levels. |
|
Heatsink Exposed: With the fan removed we can get
a better look at the nPowertek NPH-1000 heatsink,
from the ground up as it were. There are four
6mm diameter copper heatpipes connecting the copper cooling fins to the aluminum base
block. The base has been copper plated, but is indeed aluminum. The
fins are elevated 44mm above the base to provide clearance for
adjacent motherboard components. Note the four fixed mounting points for the 95mm
fan to attach to. Each copper fin is about 31.5mm deep by 45.2mm long.

Top: From the front, the
95mm fan spins at 2200RPM to move air through the widely spaced copper cooling fins
of the NPH-1000 heatsink. There is no wire grill to protect the fan from
errant wires inside the computer case, so keep it tidy! |

Heatsink
Side A:
The copper
fins are 0.3mm thick and spaced on average 1.6mm apart.
The four copper heatpipes hold the entire heatsink together with joints that
are lightly soldered. Areas which have little or no cool air moving through are
left vacant. The space directly behind the
fan motor, for example, is void
of any copper fins. The copper-plated aluminum base is 6mm thick, and
on the opposite side of the copper heatpipes is a thin 1.6mm thick copper
sheet. The heat path from the CPU to the heatpipes is very direct. |
|
Heatsink Side B: The copper fins are grooved
to closely fit the outside profile of a 6mm copper heatpipe.
The heatpipes do not actually wrap around the entire circumference
of the copper fins, which is a bit of an odd choice... There are two heatpipes on the
outside diameter of the heatsink and two more along the inner lines of the fins. In both cases the heatpipes only go about halfway around the inside/outside of the heatsink. At the base, all four copper heatpipes are packed side-to-side for optimal heat transfer. |
|
Heatsink Base: The nPowertek NPH-1000 heatsink has a 6mm
thick aluminum based capped off with a think 1.6mm thick copper plate.
That plate mates with the processor, and it measures 31x49mm in size. A
good size for Intel CPUs, but a little small for AMD processors whose integrated heatspreader is 38mm square. The base is flat in one
axis and slight concave in the opposite. The copper has a polished finish with a surface
roughness of ~16 microinches. Note the two holes on opposite sides of the base, these
are for mounting the different CPU clips. |
