With a 125W heat load applied by the FrostyTech synthetic thermal test platform, the Verax Helado PWM-T heatsink performed admirably while remaining whisper quiet under power. The Helado PWM-T posted a rise above ambient temperature of 24.3°C, with 36.3 dBA noise generated at its stock fan speed setting. However, since we were unable to force the fan into full-speed mode by shorting out the on board thermistor, what the exact RPM of the 92mm fan was during this thermal test remains a somewhat ambiguous point... Generally in the open air synthetic tests that FrostyTech conducts, the internal fan thermistor rarely kicks in to augment a thermally controlled fans' speed. So considering this, we're going to assume that the fan speed was on the order of 1100RPM; but I'm not completely certain that is accurate. The mounting clips for LGA775 processors offer a no-fuss means of installing the Helado PWM-T heatsink onto the motherboard. On the other hand, the K8 mounting clip is slightly underwhelming in this application. Designed to be used between the fins of an extruded heatsink, the thin (0.7mm) sheet metal visibly twisted as the Helado PWM-T was being installed onto the K8 heatsink retention frame. Verax would be well advised to rethink the K8 mounting clip, or at the very least use one made from thicker metal that doesn't start to twist out of shape when the cam lever is engaged, and force applied. The K8 mounting clip is both socket AM2 and socket 939 compatible. In any case, that the Verax Helado PWM-T heatsink managed a thermal result of this class (24.3°C RAAT) while producing less than 40 dBA, is the most remarkable point to take away from all of this commentary.
