360° View - Verax Helado PWM-T Heatsink

The Heatsink Fan:
The 92x92x25mm fan will spins at 1100-2800RPM, depending on the CPU temperature with compatible Pulse Width Modulation enabled motherboards. The fan draws power from a 4-pin PWM motherboard fan header, and is backwards compatible with 3-pin types. The seven bladed impeller is translucent, but not LED illuminated. The fan is held in place on the Helado heatsink by rubber mounting posts, and because the motor is double ball bearing it is very quiet. There is a thermistor located just behind the motor of the Xinruilian fan as well.

Heatsink Top:
The Looking down at the top of the Verax Helado PWM-T heatsink the four sets of 6m diameter copper heatpipes can be seen poking their tops through either side. The heatpipes, and indeed the whole fin section, is slanted at 10° within the 52 x 104mm space it occupies. The aluminum fan shroud is attached to the rest of the heatsink with a couple screws, and in turn the fan is attached to the shroud with those nifty anti-vibration rubber posts. The Helado is shown with its LGA775 mounting brackets installed in all of these photos, and from this angle you can see how the are affixed. Note the elegant and slightly eccentric concave swoop in the front/rear edge of the cooling fins.

Heatsink Side A:
The stacked aluminum cooling fin section stands 98mm tall, and as you can see the overlapping joints and heatpipes are staggered at a 10° angle. Each aluminum fin is nickel plated and 0.5mm thick. The 39 fins are separated 2.0mm from one another; such wide fin spacing is ideal for slow moving air as there is less resistance to airflow. Curiously, the fan shroud has holes punched for a 92mm fan on the rear as well. The Verax Helado PWM-T uses push-pin type Intel connectors for socket 775 processors. When used on socket AM2 or socket 754/939/940 AMD K8 processors the mounting brackets shown here are removed and a simple metal bracket slides into the groves cut into the top of the base (which you can see here). The entire heatsink stands ~127mm tall.

Heatsink Side B:
The four copper heatpipes are nickel plated and soldered at the fin and base for optimum thermal transmission. Behind the 92mm fan is a plenum about 4mm deep - fairly average. The base consists of a nickel-plated copper section to which the heatpipes are soldered, and a base cap made from aluminum that is also nickel plated. The copper base is 5mm thick and set at a 10° angle as well.

We previously mentioned that there was one simple thing Verax could have done to reduce errant rattles on the Helado PWM-T heatsink, and here's why. The side flaps of the aluminum fan shroud are only attached at the top of the heatsink, so the bottom edges float just above the edges of the aluminum fins. Under some situations this may cause a rattling sound (to be clear, we didn't have this problem at all during our tests) if they start vibrating. Before you install this heatsink, stuff a little bit of foam or double sided tape under the bottom edge of the shroud. That should take care of any potential rattles in the future.

Heatsink Base:
The nickel plated copper base measures 39 x 39mm and mostly covers the AMD K8 processor integrated heat spreader (the sides are angled at 15°). The four 6mm diameter heatpipes are soldered to the base, and with only 2mm separating them from the CPU they are well positioned to absorb heat. The base has a machined finish and is perfectly flat in both axis. Surface roughness is on the order of ~32 microinches, which is considered quite good.
