The Heatsink Fan:
The 70x70x15mm fan rotates between 3800-5400RPM, depending
on the temperature of the ambient air as sensed by a set of
thermistors located under the fan motor. The AVC Z7U7414001's fan draws
power from a standard 3-pin motherboard fan header that supports
RPM monitoring. Note that on either side of the fan are 10mm
wide sections of aluminum fin. There is no wire fan grill to protect the
fan blades from errant wires, which is something we would have liked added. |
|
Heatsink Top:
The plastic fan shroud is just clipped on, and removes
pretty easily to expose the full glory of all the cooling fins.
A single spring tensioned clip runs down
the center of the Z7U7414001 heatsink, occupying just 3mm space in total - a
substantial improvement over some of AVC's previous heatsinks (where the clip was a sold
block of metal running down the center). Each of the aluminum fins measures roughly 92x43mm in
size. The fins are 0.3mm thick, and spaced 1.0mm apart. |
|
Heatsink Side A
From the
side, we can see four 6mm diameter copper heatpipes connecting to the
5mm thick copper base plate, with all
connections soldered for reduced thermal resistance. The heatsink uses a clip which locks
only onto the center tab of the K8 heatsink frame (socket AM2/939).
The plastic cam arm rotates and applies pressure so there is no need for installation tools.
The fan is actually suspended about 3.5mm above the cooling fins, but this is hidden behind
the fan shroud. |
|
Heatsink Side B:
The AVC Z7U7414001 heatsink uses 59 nickel plated aluminum fins measuring 0.3mm
thick. The aluminum fins are spaced 1.0mm apart.
Each fin is soldered to the copper base, and if this is done
properly the aluminum fins will be held firmly in place and produce
a joint with low thermal resistance. From one side of the
heatsink to the other, heatpipes are located to reduce obstructions to airflow. |
|
Heatsink Base: The 5mm thick copper base plate has a machined finish which translates into a
surface roughness of ~16 microinches. The surface is very flat in
both axis. The AVC Z7U7414001 heatsink comes with a pre-applied patch
of grey thermal compound, so initial installation is a snap. The
base is 42x77mm in size. |
