Mk.II Synthetic Thermal Heatsink Test Results
Results based on readings from a 38x38mm
copper interface die with 125W heat load on the Mk.II Test Platform.
Thermal Test values for each heatsink were calculated by determining
the rise over ambient temperature at time of test. Information on
Frostytech's test methodology is available
here. |

125w thermal test (°c) |
noise level (dba) |
*heatsinks are
ranked according to the 125w thermal test results column (rise over
ambient temp.). low temperatures with low noise levels are considered
best. for reference heatsinks with variable-speed fans, only the high
speed (12v) fan test result is included in the comparison sheet; more
detailed results reside in each specific heatsink
review. |
the frostytech mk.ii platform stresses
each k8-class heatsink with a 125w heat load. once equilibrium is reached we note the rise in temperature
(2nd column from the right) above that of the ambient air temperature. the
far right column identifies the noise level of each specific heatsink, and
naturally the quieter the better!
The Coolermaster Hyper48 is an
older heatsink, and what was once a high end thermal solution is now really a
mainstream cooler. The Hyper48 achieved a rise above ambient temperature
of 31.7°C, with 43.6 dBA noise output. Given its +800gram
weight and low noise levels, the Hyper48 works well as a socket 754/939/940
heatsink for moderately paced AMD Athlon64 chips. Toss in compatibility with all
that Intel has to offer and the versatility is certainly compelling.
Although a beefy copper cooler isn't for
everyone, the Coolermaster KHC-L91 Hyper48 heatsink has its
place and can handle the task at hand. You can judge for yourself if it meets
your own personal thermal requirements by considering its position in the
FrostyTech K8 heatsink reference list above. While not listed here, when
running with a low fan speed the Zalman
CNPS9500-LED is the only heatsink we've thus tested which
nets both lower temperatures
(29.7°C) and sound levels (36.2 dBA) against the Coolermaster Hyper48 heatsink.
