Acoustic Samples: Listen to this
Heatsink!
With its
fan running at full speed, the Arctic Cooling Silencer 64 Ultra TC heatsink produces about 55.5
dBA. If temperatures remain low, the fan speed drops to about 1000RPM, or
about 28 dBA noise in our tests. There is no manual way to control the
speed of the fan, so expect it to run most often at the upper speed level
than not. To listen to this heatsink in operation, be sure to click on the
headphones icons below and play the each of the sample MP3 files.
Sound Level Measurements: Which Heatsink is Quietest? Listening to the actual noise a heatsink makes allows you to hear what pure numbers alone cannot get across. To further emphasize FrostyTech's reliance on cold hard facts when evaluating a heatsink, we also take noise level measurements with a sound level meter.
The Arctic Cooling Silencer 64 U heatsink operates at both the extremely quiet, and moderately noisy sound levels according to our measurements. Please keep in mind that the lower accuracy limit for the Omega HHSLI sound meter is 35 dBA. With the fan at its slowest RPM setting, it is effectively silent. However, when the fan is running at its full speed (default 12V), the noise level is a more moderate 55.5 dBA. Surface Finish Comparator Notes: Flatness and Finish Surface finish is an important factor that we all look for when holding a new heatsink. Flipping a cooler over to see how well the base has been machined is a quick way to judge the attention to detail that was put into making it. The following test involves the use of a Surface Roughness Comparator, which offers a concise cross section common machine surface finishes. The Arctic Cooling Silencer 64 Ultra TC heatsink has a surface roughness of approximately ~63 microinches, which is considered satisfactory. Next, let's see how this heatsink handles the heat compared to a selection of other Athlon64 K8 heatsinks!
