Foxconn Generic Socket A Heatsink Review

This is one of those heatsinks that we've seen everywhere, but have never been able to find out the model number for. I believe this cooler is made by Foxconn, so we're simply going to call it the 'Foxconn Generic' Socket A heatsink.

The heatsink itself has a rather simple appearance, but down below it is equipped with a nickel plated copper base plate which is attached with a set of screws. This isn't the best way of adding a copper heatspreader to an all aluminum extrusion heatsink, but it is one of the least expensive and simple ways to go about achieving that feature.

Machine screws, a small amount of thermal compound, and a machined base may not sound like that much, but we'll have to look at the final test results before we pass judgement on this rather bland, and generic looking OEM heatsink.

The Fan:

The delta fan is thin, and 60mm in size. The upside is that the heatsink is quiet - producing just 46dB of noise under power. The fan draws its power via a three-pin motherboard fan header.

Heatsink Top:
The cross cuts open up the fins and enhance exhaust ventilation. The spring clip runs right through the center of the Foxconn heatsink, and a small tab at the fulcrum prevents the heatsink body from sliding around. The fan screws right onto the heatsink's fins, the outer three of which are raised up slightly.

Side A:
There are 20 fins on the Foxconn heatsink which measure ~1mm thick. Each fin is separated 2mm apart from the one another for good airflow, but the density is rather low when compared to the current crop of coolers being produced these days. The aluminum base measures 3mm thick, and the copper base plate as well.

Side B:
The clip requires a screwdriver to engage, but isn't to difficult to maneuver. A small area is cut out from the surrounding fins to make installation simpler. The cross cuts are 3mm wide.
Heatsink Base:

The base of the Foxconn heatsink is machined aluminum to which a nickel plated chunk of copper has ben attached. The copper heatspreader is flat and pretty smooth, and is attached with the aide of four stainless steel machine screws. The interface between the copper and aluminum is filled with thermal compound. The heatsink comes with a pre-applied patch of pink thermal interface material.
