Vantec CCK-7015 Heatsink From All Angles
The Fan:
The 10mm thick fan is mounted below the fan shroud which holds it in place. Given the small amount of vertical space in a 1U server this is an interesting way to tackle the mounting problem. Most other manufacturers place the shroud at the bottom and use it to direct airflow. In the case of the CCK-7015, the fan is mounted flush to the knife-edge tips of the skived copper fins. The fan draws power from a standard three-pin motherboard header which supports RPM monitoring.

Heatsink Top:
The microfins are framed off by the spring clips which go over the mounting posts. Because there is no room for a vertical HSRM in a 1U server, the mounting system consists of a behind-the-PCB metal plate. Four screws are all that is required to mount this heatsink in place.

Side A:
The CCK-7015 measures just 25mm high, making it just the right size to fit into a 1U P4 or Xeon server. Air is drawn in from the top of the heatsink and exhausted out to either side in what is termed an impingement orientation. The fan shroud is held in place with four small screws which are tapped directly into the copper base.

Side B:
The copper base measures about 3.5mm thick and the fins 0.2mm. Each of the 60 or so fins are spaced about 1.0mm apart. The CCK-7015 has some of the thinnest skived fins of any cooler, a thickness made feasible by the fins' height of just 10mm. One of the nice benefits of a skived heatsink is that the tips of the fins come to a knife edge which have little resistance to air flow.
Heatsink Base:
The base has been machined perfectly flat and smooth. The holes around the edges are for mounting the heatsink on a 1U server board which would have no room for large clips. Only a small amount of thermal compound should be used with a base of this finish quality. Curiously, the edges of the aluminum fan shroud are not flush to the base of the heatsink, but instead rise up 1mm.
