Fortis Tech Monster 90 From All
Angles |
|
The Fan: Equipped with a 92mm fan, the
Fortis Tech Monster 90 should be a quiet
heatsink. Larger fans can rotate slower,
yet still move as much air as much smaller fans. In this case,
the fan is not very loud, and not very quiet - middle of the
road, but not low-noise. The fan connects to the motherboard fan
header via a 3-pin connector which only supports the RPM monitoring function. A
Molex pass thru supplies power to the fan itself. |
|
Top:
The 18mm diameter copper
slug reaches up 13mm short of the top of
the silver extrusion. The copper slug on this heatsink was also covered in
machine oil which isn't a very reassuring sign.
The silver aluminum extrusion is 77mm in diameter, with the bulk of the metal in a central 35mm cylinder.
The outer extrusion is 92mm wide, making this a monster of a heatsink - as its name
applies. |
|
Side
A: The lower portion of the
heatsink is 77mm in size so as to fit around board mounted
components. If the Monster 90 were 92mm wide at the base it wouldn't fit
on a single motherboard! The mechanism for keeping this large heatsink in place reminds
me of the original golden orb, with a few slight changes. The heatsinks clips on
with a three-clip / one-clip design as does any other Socket A
heatsink. A cam rotates around to then apply the pressure to the core of the
processor.
|
|
Side B: You can
see the clipping mechanism a little better here, the heatsink is tool free which
is nice, and in practice the clipping system works
easily enough. |
|
Heatsink Base:
The clipping system is more complex than with other heatsinks
- consisting of three separate parts. The base of the Monster 90 is machined and
finished well. There are very slight machining marks, but the thermal compound should compensate
just fine. |
