Much to our surprise, the Tocools S1 does offer a little gain over the stock Intel cooling solution, but only by a degree or so - making them just about the same realistically.

The difference in the final rise above ambient test results is significantly less. The Tocools S1 manages to basically come in at the same level of the Intel Socket 478 stock heatsink. With performance levels this close, there really is no need to switch out the stock Intel solution for the Tocools solution. For OEM's however, the Tocools heatsink may present itself well for industrial applications or the like, but this all depends on price.

End users looking for a good Socket 478 heatsink to upgrade from their stock cooler would be best served to aim for the Tocools Regal, or AVC Sunflower, Zalman CNPS6500B-Cu, or any of the other heatsinks shown here. Additionally, Tocools have some issues to consider with the design of the clipping mechanism in use on the S1. The two spring tensioned wire clips that hold the unit in place are far from ideal. There is a good chance that the clips may not stay put in the event the case is bumped hard. As with the socket A Novasonic cooler which had excellent thermal performance but a poor clip mechanism, Tocools really ought to design the pentium 4 S1 heatsink with a clipping system that holds more firmly.
