Kuthtec KTM2001 Honeycomb Copper Core Heatsink Review

Officially marketed on the basis of "3D isotropic thermal conductive path", and "multi wind tunnels" we're not quite sure what to make of the cooling system in use on the KTM2001 heatsink from Kuthtec. As with our review of the KTM2101 variant, we're happy to just call this heatsink the "Swiss Cheese" cooler, because that's what is really looks like.

The Swiss cheese appearance of the horizontally mounted thick aluminum sheets is something you won't see from any other manufacturer, because as far as we know, Kuthtec are the only company actively building heatsinks like this.

Now if you've already read our review of the KTM2101 you might be tempted to draw your conclusions early. However, while the two Kuthtec heatsinks use similar methods of construction, the fins on this heatsink are mounted flush to one another.

So while the KTM2101 has 1mm spaced fins, all the cooling on this heatsink occurs within the 120 or so "multi wind tunnels."

Thermally, the two heatsinks tested remarkably close to each other, and as the exhaust air travels down through the heatsink there is another side benefit. Since the air is not exhausted out to the sides, it also helps cool the chip down below.

The central copper core is hollowed out a bit for the last 20mm or so. Surrounding the copper section are 18 sheets of aluminum with concentric patterns of ovals and circles punched out. Kuthtec call all these holes a "multi-channel wind tunnel," and it is rather hard to comment on just how effective something like this will be.

For example, the only other heatsink which is even remotely similar to the Kuthtec KT2001 is the CPUfx "Core" heatsink which while nice to look at was a bust thermally.

Looking down from the top of the heatsink it appears as though the central ring of perforations is blocked off by the clip which attaches to the copper core on the other side. In reality, there is still enough space on the bottom for air to escape. Looking at this heatsink also brings to mind a few mods that may look quite cool, but that's something for another day, let's take a better look at the Kuthtec KTM2001 now.
