Vantec VA4C7040 From All Angles

The Fan: The seven-bladed TMD fans from YS-Tech are unique because the motor which drives the impeller is around the outside of the fan, under that metal casing. In standard fans, the motor is located at the center. The benefit of this design is that there is no dead spot directly under the center of the impeller - because there is no motor. The dead spot on standard brushless fans is usually right over the hottest part of a heatsink. The fan connects to a standard three-pin motherboard header and supports RPM monitoring.

Top: Unlike the original Thermal Sonic heatsink, or later models from Arkua, or Thermal Integration copper core is off center so it sits centered on the core of the processor. In this way, the copper core makes direct contact with the processor. The copper core does not reach all the way up to the top of the fins, but instead only rises 20mm in height. Take note of how thing the cross sections are here, at the base they grow to 10mm in thickness.

Side A:The clip is a combination of tool-free, and tool-capable. Basically, the heatsink can be installed with either a flat head screw driver, or just with the fingers.
Side B:
The fins only seem to take up 40mm of each side of the heatsink, but since they are nested the remaining area is not wasted by any means. The small fan shroud helps to keep the fan in place, and direct some of the exhaust air down through the body of the heatsink.

Heatsink Base:

The 25mm diameter copper core sits just proud of the aluminum base and off to one side (ie. not centered in the heatsink body). The fins spread out from the core in a jagged pattern, and while it is hard to see the base is undercut by 1.5mm for socket cam arm clearance. The copper core is the only part of the heatsink which actually comes in contact with the processor and is pretty flat in our tests.
