Abstract: When the Zalman CNPS5700D-Cu arrived I have to admit there was a bit of a "whoa" factor to contend with.

Zalman CNPS5700D-Cu From All Angles

The Fan:

The fan duct is pretty big, and directs the warm exhaust air from the heatsink to any direction you like since it swivels. The point though is to direct that exhaust towards the rear case fan and get it out of the computer as quickly as possible. The fan hooks up to the motherboard via a 3-pin fan header or it can be connected to Zalman's fan mate one to make the cooler run under silent operation.

Top: The central spring holds the copper heatsink which forms the heart of this cooler in place. The entire frame clips into the heatsink retention mechanism, and the single clip is what applies the force to the copper fan section, and in turn the processor core. The fins (of which there are lots) all all copper and measure about 0.2mm thick. The heatsink only accepts 80mm fans, or fan adaptors.

Side A: Looking from the front and the back you can get a good idea of the scale of the fan duct. It is literally about the size of the entire heatsink, and this is important. The fan duct works well directing the exhaust air, and actually improves cooling when installed by a very slight amount.
Side B:
Here again we can see just how large the air duct really is on the CNPS5700D. The heatsink measures 150mm high, so if you have very thin case chances are that this heatsink may not fit entirely. The top of the air duct sits substantially higher than the top of PCI or AGP card for example (by about 50mm roughly).

Heatsink Base:

The copper portion of the base of the CNPS5700D measures 30mm by 38mm. The finish on the base is really good as is the case with every Zalman heatsink we have tested to date. Since the manufacturing process involves joining many thin pieces of copper together it is necessary to mill the base flat. The results are razor smooth and that means only a small amount of good quality thermal compound should be used.
