Chauh-Choung DTA-478 Socket 478 Heatsink Review
Chauh-Choung DTA-478 Socket 478 Heatsink Review

Abstract: The heatsink uses a dead simple extrusion design, and some rather interesting clips which are screwed into place on the heatsink itself.

CC-DTA-478 Heatsink From All Angles

The Fan:
The 70mm fan is rated at 0.25A and is made by a company called Protechnic. Other than the 70mm size, the 11 fans on the impeller kind of stand out.

The fan screws in directly to the heatsink, and could be upgraded to something more powerful as long as it were 70mm in size. The mounting points keep the fan 2mm above the tips of the fins. It connects via a 3-pin fan header on the motherboard.

Heatsink Top:
As we said before the DTA-478 uses a dead plain extrusion, with no cross cuts, or even fin texturing. There are a total of 21 fins and each one measures 69mm long by 35mm high. The fan screws directly into the fins, and there are just two guides to ensure that it is kept in the right position. Since the fan is the same size as the heatsink there is no need for a fan shroud really.

Side A:
Even the side of the DTA-478 plane, with no cross cuts to allow warm air to escape. All exhaust is forced out the left and right sides. The clips are held in place on each of the two side flanges with a small screw. Each corner is very roughly beveled.
Side B:
Each of the 23 extruded fins tapers from 1mm thick at the base to about 0.9mm thick at the very top. The fins are each spaced ~1.75mm apart and the base plate is the standard 6mm thick. I'm not entirely sure why 6mm thick bases have become the standard but most heatsinks conform.
Heatsink Base:
Speaking of base plates, we stripped the aluminum/graphite pad off of this one, but didn't go any further in terms of cleaning it up. The base is perfectly flat in one axis, and concave in the other (normal for extrusions which have not been machined). The only treatment the base has seen in some sanding to remove any small inconsistancies from the extrusion die.
