Vantec GSN-7015 Socket 478 Heatsink Review
Vantec GSN-7015 Socket 478 Heatsink Review

Abstract: Powered by a chunky 70mm fan the GSN-7015 produces only a moderate amount of noise, much like other socket 478 heatsinks on the market.

Vantec GSN-7015 Heatsink From All Angles
The Fan:
The 70mm fan has no less than 11 blades on the impeller and looks like a turbine engine. The fan attaches to the heatsink directly and is held off 4mm above the fins for good airflow. The AVC fan connects via a 3-pin fan header on the motherboard.

Heatsink Top:
The clip is pretty complex and actually fits on the heatsink between two set of fins in the center. The heatsink is 83mm long like all heatsinks designed to fit into the HSRM used in conjunction with the socker 478 formfactor. The clipping strength the GSN-7015 places on the processor is moderate, and sufficient.

Side A:
The side of the GSN-7015 is stepped but otherwise plane. There are no extra cuts to allow warm air to escape so all exhaust air is forced out from the left and right sides. The clips are easy to engage, and remove. Tension is moderate, and shouldn't cause the motherboard PCB to bend.
Side B:
A total of 22 fins are used on the GSN-7015 for cooling. The fins are about 0.75-1.0mm thick and spaced 2mm apart. The base plate is 8mm thick, which goes against the norm of 6mm we see on most heatsinks.
Heatsink Base:
Unfortunately, the entire heatsink suffers when the base is not flat enough. On the heatsink we reviewed, Vantec had left a raw extrusion finish, so some waviness would prove to interfere with ideal thermal contact between the otherwise smooth base and our interface die.
