Dynatron Model-R 1U Cu Microfin Heatsink Review
Dynatron Model-R 1U Cu Microfin Heatsink Review

Abstract: The market for 1U servers is increasing rapidly these days as data centers increasingly move away from the bulky 3U and 5U servers that were once the staple of websites.

It is nice to work with a heatsink that is fairly quiet. The Model-R sports a low profile 10mm thick 11-bladed blue fan which rotates at 5300RPM. The fan produces enough air to penetrate the 7mm worth of fin height and cool the heatsink efficiently.

The best way to playback these heatsink recordings is a low volume through a pair of speakers, rather than headphones. Since this heatsink is intended for use in a 1U server there really shouldn't be any issues with how noisy or quite it is since servers rarely sit in the same room as the techies.

Synthetic Temperature Test Results:

FrostyTech Synthetic Temperature Test Platform (50W heat load)

4 AVC Skive 212AHO 25.1 55.0 60.0 silver goo white 1 med stiff

The clip trough is 6mm wide, and only cuts into the base by 0.5mm. Of all the Microfin heatsinks we've seen, this one had the nicest looking fins.

Why is our list of reference heatsinks so small, and limited mainly to existing Dynatron heatsinks for this review? Well, since the Model-R is a 1U heatsink it's not really accurate to compare it with jumbo heatsinks intended for desktop systems, or generally computers with ample room for cooling solutions.

So, rather than compare it with nothing (we are only beginning to see 1U heatsinks enter the market), we've thrown up the results from a group of heatsinks based on the same type of Skive process. At the very least it should give some indication of where this heatsinks stands in relation to others of similar construction. Naturally as we get a few more heatsinks intended for 1U servers in the door we will update the list of reference coolers.

You can see by looking at the results, for its' small size the Model-R manages to pack a fairly large punch (relatively). While a result of 60 degrees is not something to write home about in a desktop system, the rules for servers are little bit different. Anyhow lets see how the real numbers fly as we examine the results of our tests on the synthetic temperature platform as rise above ambient temperatures.
