Cooler Master DP5-5F11 Heatsink Review
Cooler Master DP5-5F11 Heatsink Review

Abstract: Like all coolers, what was once good can become dated rather quickly. The Cooler Master DP5-5F11 seeks to change that.

FrostyTech Synthetic Temperature Test Platform:

The FrostyTech Synthetic Temperature Test Platform consists of an aluminum block heated by a 120V 250 Ohm precision resistor producing 50W of heat. That heat is transmitted to the heatsink via the aluminum block and up through special copper die templates with thermistors embedded directly in them.

A temperature reading for a particular heatsink is taken once the temperature stabilizes in the copper die template. Since each of the die templates have the approximate surface area of either a silicon topped or heatspreader-topped processor the flow of heat to the base of the heatsink accurately mimics a real life configuration.

Shown with the copper die template for a silicon-topped processor, the synthetic heatsink test apparatus awaits a coating of silver-based thermal compound and the Coolermaster DP5-5F11 heatsink. A slightly larger copper die template was used to test the effective cooling ability of the DP5-5F11 atop a heatspreader-based processor like an overclocked PGA Celeron processor.

Ouch, the age of this heatsink really shows on this comparison of coolers. The DP5-5F11 just can't handle the heat load imposed by our synthetic temperature apparatus. There isn't much else that can be said, or for that matter, needs to be said.

Rise Above Ambient Temperature (C)

1 Globalwin CAK38 18.3 20.6

9 Neng Tyi SN03 18.2 29.5
10 Coolermaster DP5-5F11 31.6 41.9

When we examine the rise above ambient temperature scores we see that the DP5-5F11 scores an abysmal 41.9 degree rise above ambient temperature. There is no way around such a high temperature reading. This heatsink just lacks the surface area and size necessary to remove heat effectively on a current day processors.

It's older more conservative design is good for PGA based processors or possibly sub-700Mhz processors. As even BGA heatsinks are gaining in size and catching up to the dimensions of this little old Coolermaster I'm sure another use for it can be found.

Assuming the means can be found to attach it to a BGA chipset, it might just find itself a second life cooling something a little bit more in its range. ;-)
