Synthetic Test Results:
Considering the sheer size of the heatsink and of the fan I would have been surprised if the FCE-62540D was unable to take top position against the reference heatsinks. Of course it managed to know the venerable SuperOrb out of first place in this round up. With its high power fan it's not really a surprise, but considering the noise this fan produces its' also a bit of a trade off. The closest comparison to the Vantec FCE-62540D heatsink comes from the SuperORB, which comes in close when looking at performance under the large copper die template tests. The SuperORB fell in way below under the smaller copper die template tests however. At the bottom end of the scale we can see the Ascent (a typical aluminum folded fin design), does rather poorly. The Thermalbuster tags very close in performance with that of the FCE-62540D but remains a few degrees in the rear, even more so in the all important smaller copper die template tests. Only the Coolermaster was able to jump ahead in that category, but still many degrees less than the performance of the much noisier FCE-62540D.
The results of the test when we look just at rise above ambient temperature become even clearer. While the Thermaltake fair very well in tests with the large copper die template, coming in only about four degrees warmer than the FCE-62540D, its' results with the smaller copper die template were less than expected. In this situation, the Vantec came in at a show-stopping 25 degrees rise above ambient! Conclusion: For overclockers or just power users the Vantec seems to offer amazing performance levels. The downside is that along with those performance increases is a substantial amount of noise from the fan. If this were a home computer it would be on the just-bareable level. If this heatsink were going into an office server, or maybe even a webserver, locked away where no-one needs to be all the time then the performance would come at no costs. We also really like the largish thumb clip and found attaching the heatsink simple, and without fears of snapping something in two. The Delta fan is a reliable ball-bearing cooling solution as well. Bottom line is that if your case can fit it, and your ears can stand it, the Vantec FCE-62540D offers some rather serious performance gains.
