DeepCool Maelstrom 240 Liquid Cooling System Review
DeepCool Maelstrom 240 Liquid Cooling System Review
  88%
Abstract: DeepCool's Maelstrom 240 is a self contained CPU liquid cooling system consists of a dual fan, 240mm wide aluminum heat exchanger and combination pump head / skived copper waterblock. With Frostytech's synthetic thermal test platforms applying up to a 200W heat load, only we can accurately rank how the Maelstrom 240 liquid cooler stacks up

360° View - DeepCool Maelstrom 240 - Water Block

Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

The DeepCool Maelstrom 240 waterblock stands 32mm tall, 70mm round and 85mm tip-to-tip where the FEP tubing connects. Power is supplied by a 3-pin motherboard fan header. The DeepCool logo slowly pulsates by means of an internal white LED which serves as a visual indicator of the pump's power status. The 90-degree pipe connections swivel approximately 45 degrees from vertical. The Intel and AMD metal mounting brackets attach with a couple screws to the base of the pump head.

The pump head is roughly 70mm square when not including the metal AMD/Intel brackets or tube connections. Behind the superficial bezel the actual waterblock occupies a surprisingly small volume.

Based on previous units of similar design Frostytech has disassembled, the copper base plate should measure ~2mm thick. From edge to edge, it measures 68x52mm in size. Anti-tamper hex screws prevent it from being opened for a closer look at the micro skived copper plate inside, however. A small patch of pre-applied grey thermal compound ships with the Maelstrom 240 to make installation a breeze.

360° View - DeepCool Maelstrom 240 - Heat Exchanger

Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

The 28mm thick aluminum heat exchanger used with the Maelstrom 240 measures 274x120mm in size. It supports a pair of 120mm fans mounted side-by-side.

Mounting holes are provided on both faces of the heat exchanger so two 120mm fans could be mounted on each side, if desired.

The 7-9.5mm O.D. FEP tubing is connected to metal barbs at the heat exchanger which do not swivel. The FEP tubing is fairly kink-resistant.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineer's straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axes.

(as supplied, with thermal interface compound applied)

The copper base of the DeepCool Maelstrom 240 measures ~2mm thick and has a machined surface finish with a surface roughness of approximately ~16 microinches. The copper base plate is generally flat in one axis and very slightly wavy in the opposite.

Next, acoustic measurements and then AMD and Intel synthetic thermal test result charts.
