Abstract: The Gelid Antarctica heatsink features a nice narrow footprint which measures 141x74mm with the 140mm fan installed. The slim profile should make the Antarctica cooler more compatible with a larger range of motherboards.

Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

Gelid's Antarctica heatsink ships with a 140mm PWM fan that draws power from a standard 4-pin fan header. The 160mm tall heatsink employs five 6mm diameter copper heatpipes which rise up through a 110mm tall aluminum fin stack. The aluminum fins measure 0.4mm thick and are spaced 2.0mm apart. The bottom-most fin is elevated 44mm above the socket for motherboard component clearance.

The wire fan clips lack thumb holds so they are less likely to interfere with the back of a videocard; the entire heatsink measures 141mm wide. Heat pipes are soldered to the copper base plate and aluminum fins swaged onto the heatpipes. The outer-most heatpipes are generally positioned towards the center of the CPU base plate so the maximum heat is conducted to the region of aluminum fins which receives the highest airflow.

The copper heatspreader at the base of the Gelid Antarctica heatsink measures 35x34mm in size and is between 2.5-5mm thick. The extruded aluminum cap on top is 25mm thick and cross cut with fins. Note the small crimp in the outside edge of each fin.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineer's straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axes.

Gelid's Antarctica heatsink employs a solid copper heat spreader which has been machined flat. Base flatness is excellent in both axes. The machined finish is very slightly ridged, surface roughness is at or better than ~32 microinches.
