Abstract: The Shadow Rock LP is a 75mm tall low profile heatsink rated for heat loads up to 130W TDP. It's built around four 6mm diameter copper heatpipes and relies on a single 120x120x25mm "PureWings" fan operating at 1500RPM.

Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

BeQuiet's Shadow Rock LP heatsink comes with a single 120mm PWM fan that exhausts downward through the heatsinks' 105x122mm aluminum fin array. The fan draws power from standard 4-pin fan header. The heatsink has a footprint of 122x136mm and is built around four 6mm diameter copper heatpipes, two of which loop around the base block into a small fin section mounted above. Each nickel plated aluminum fin measures 0.3mm thick and is spaced 1.5mm apart from its neighbour.

The nickel plated aluminum cooling fins are soldered to each copper heatpipe. Four heatpipes intersect the upper cooling fins while two of these loop around and are soldered to a smaller, 8x76x63mm module of cooling fins. Wire fan clips hold the 120mm fan in place. The main fin stack is elevated 32mm above the CPU socket for clearance.

The leading edges of the nickel plated cooling fins are slightly recessed from the back of the fan to create a plenum, making it easier for air to enter the fins. The nickel plated copper base of the Shadow Rock LP heatsink measures 40x40mm in size and between 2.2-5.0mm thick. The exposed tips of each heatpipe are covered with aluminum caps for the sake of visual appearance.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineer's straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axes.

The copper baseplate of BeQuiet's Shadow Rock LP heatsink is machined and nickel plated and comes with a pre-applied patch of silicon based thermal compound. Surface roughness is at or better than ~8 microinches. The base is perfectly flat in one axis and very slightly convex in the opposite.

Shown with thermal compound removed; note that BeQuiet have soldered the heatpipes to the copper base plate in order to lower thermal joint resistance.
