On the heatsink test bench today is a 1U server heatsink for Intel LGA1366 Xeon processors. I know what you're thinking, but the Dynatron G199 1U server heatsink is still on the market, in this and minor variations for current socket formfactors. Plus, Frostytech has received a couple reader requests regarding 1U server heatsinks for custom rack mounted equipment, so... time to give this little screaming banshie a once over on the 200 Watt thermal test platform!

Most of the criteria we focus on in desktop processor heatsink reviews flies out the window when it comes to server heatsinks, especially 1U server CPU coolers which can be no taller than 29mm! Consequently, this review will be concise and to the point.

Airflow is supplied via a solid 7015-aloy aluminum-frame squirrel cage fan that rotates at 6,000RPM and moves upwards of 14CFM airflow at 63 dBA noise. The 15x70x70mm PWM fan draws air in from the bottom, through two sides of the Dynatron G199 heatsink fin assembly, before exhausting hot air out the top to one side of the heatsink.

At full speed the Dynatron G199 fan is very loud, though it can slow to 1100RPM (2.5CFM) during low duty cycles. The fan is rated to between 1.28mm-H2O to 46mm-H20 static pressure. Fan life expectancy is listed at 50K hrs. The fan motor is built with dual ball bearings to ensure operational longevity in the hot confines of a 1U rack mount chassis. Sleeve bearings rely on a thin film of oil which will often dry out and lead to fan seizure in hot environments.

The heatsink itself is built from a skived copper slab measuring 88x90mm in size and 12mm thick. The remaining 17mm in permissible 1U heatsink height is taken up by the 70mm aluminum squirrel cage fan and aluminum fan shroud. Weighing in at 475grams, Dynatron's G199 1U server LGA1366 heatsink retails for about $50 and includes a pre-applied patch of TIG830SP thermal compound so it's ready for installation right out of the box. It installs on to Intel LGA1366 Xeon and Nehalem processors.

The business end of Dyantron's G199 1U LGA1366 server heatsink is a large slab of skived copper that weighs nearly half a kilogram. The skived copper fins are shown below with the fan and fan shroud removed.

The cast / metal injection moulded aluminum squirrel cage fan housing is painted matt-silver and looks almost like it is made from magnesium (it's not).

Intake air flows through the copper fins of the heatsink body before the squirrel cage fan draws it up through a 49mm diameter aperture in the black anodized aluminum fan shroud below. The shroud fits pretty tightly over the copper fins (the skived tips have been machined flat) so there is little space for air to circumvent moving through the copper cooling fins.

Installation Hardware

Dynatron's G199 1U server heatsink includes a pre-applied patch of thermal compound and four spring-tensioned Intel socket LGA1366 mounting screws. The captive mounting hardware is shipped attached to the body of the heatsink, so the cooler need only be removed from its packaging and placed on the processor, then installed. A phillips or hex-head screw driver can be used to torque down the four mounting screws to firmly hold it in place.
