Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper
interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the
LGA1155/1156/775 version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature
results listed for each heatsink were calculated by determining the
rise over ambient temperatures at time of test. Information on

The heat output from
Intel processors varies so Frostytech tests with two thermal values that
represent the upper limits of existing CPU families. With a 150W heat load
applied by the Intel LGA115x version of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test
platform, the Noctua NH-L9i heatsink was able to maintain a temperature
result of 30.8°C over ambient (46.3dBA noise) at full fan speed.
After
reducing the speed of the 15mm thick 95mm fan from 2500RPM to 1800RPM, CPU
die temperature increased to 37.1°C over ambient while noise output fell to
41.5dBA.
Noctua's
NH-L9i heatsink was then tested on the Frostytech Mrk.II synthetic thermal test
platform with an 85W heat load. Under these test conditions the heatsink
performed much better, maintaining a CPU die temperature of 19.6°C at stock fan
speed and 21.9°C at reduced fan speed.
Ultimately, Noctua's 36mm tall NH-L9i heatsink offers
excellent cooling performance among the half-dozen sub-45mm low
profile CPU coolers Frostytech as tested. For the sake of easy comparison, the
Evercool HPL-815 posts slightly lower temps at 150W/full fan speed, but with a
large noise penalty. Overall, the Noctua NH-L9i is the better heatsink of the
two for two reasons; it may be 2-3°C warmer in our test scenario at full fan
speed, but it's nearly 7dBA quieter, and at low fan speed the NH-L9i
is 21.5°C cooler than Evercool's low profile heatsink! In fact, at low fan
speed, the NH-L9i is roughly 25-35°C cooler than
all five other sub-45mm low profile heatsinks in the heatsink reference
chart. Given the choice between a Evercool HPL-815, Scythe Kozuti, Thermolab
TLI-U, Silverstone NT07-775 and Zalman CNPS2X, the Noctua NH-L9i is our
recommendation.
