DeepCool Gammaxx S40 Heatsink Review

Abstract: It's nice to once again encounter a heatsink that stands less than 150mm tall and doesn't feature some kind of complicated self contained water cooling heat exchanger... these days it's getting more difficult to find CPU coolers for compact computer systems.

Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

DeepCool's Gammaxx S40 heatsink ships with a custom 120mm PWM fan that rides over the top of the cooling fins. The 141mm tall cooler incorporates four nickel plated 6mm diameter copper heatpipes which are exposed at the base to make direct contact with the CPU. Each aluminum fin measures 0.4mm thick and is spaced 2.0mm from the next. The bottom-most fin is elevated 34mm above the base for clearance.

From the side we see four 6mm diameter copper heat pipes set into an 11mm thick aluminum base plate with small extruded cooling fins. The base pate provides support for the mounting brackets which screw into it.

The exposed heatpipes on the base of the Deepcool Gammaxx S40 create a usable surface area of 35x41mm. Looking at the top of the heatsink, we see the heatpipes are spaced 5.5mm from each other and 60mm apart so as to be in the highest airflow region. The back side of each cooling fin has a series of little 2mm tall wing lets punched into the surface.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineer's straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axes.

The exposed heatpipe base of DeepCool's Gammaxx S40 heatsink has been machined to give it a surface roughness of approximately ~32 microinches. The base has a rough feel to it when a fingernail is dragged over the machined surface. The base is not perfectly flat in both axes, a few of the heatpipes had shifted a fraction below the plane formed by the aluminum cap.
