Evercool Venti HPQ-12025 Heatsink Review
Evercool Venti HPQ-12025 Heatsink Review

Abstract: Airflow is driven by a single 120mm PWM fan whose snow white 7-bladed impeller rotates at your basic 2200RPM to 800RPM. Noise output is moderate. Because computer enthusiasts tend to be picky bunch, Evercool have tossed in one extra set of wire fan clips.

Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

The 120mm PWM fan spins at 2200-800RPM and draws power from a standard 4-pin PWM motherboard fan header. It is backwards compatible with 3-pin connectors. Four 6mm diameter copper heatpipes extend from the base up to the top of the 160mm tall Venti heatsink. Each aluminum fin measures 0.3mm thick and fins are spaced 2.0mm apart.

The Evercool Venti heatsink stands 160mm tall, the tower is 43mm wide without a fan and the first fin is elevated 46mm above the CPU socket. Heat pipes are spaced 7.5mm on center at the base and rise up through the fin stack roughly 48mm and 93mm apart. The base incorporates a 14mm thick aluminum section to provide support for clamping.

The usable area of the Evercool Venti's base measures 40x48mm in size. Looking from the top down we see the novel shape of the aluminum fins which forms a small plenum directly behind the fan motor. Heatpipes are positioned in the path of highest airflow and held in place with wire fan clips.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineer's straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axes.

The surface roughness of the base of the Evercool Venti heatsink is approximately 16 microinches, which is considered excellent. The base has a smooth machined finish which is perfectly flat in both axes.
