Results based on readings from a 38x38mm copper
interface die with 125W heat load on the AMD version of the Mk.II
Test Platform. Temperature results listed for each heatsink were
calculated by determining the rise over ambient temperatures at time

with a 125w heat load applied by the
amd version of frostytech's synthetic thermal test platform, the AMD FX-Series
Liquid Cooler was able to maintain a CPU die temperature of just 11.7°C over
ambient (62.5dBA noise) with both fans rotating at 2340RPM. After reducing the
speed of both 120mm fans to a 800RPM, the synthetic CPU die
temperature increased to 19.7°C over ambient and noise output fell to 37.1dBA.
Compared directly
against the Thermaltake Water 2.0 Pro model, AMD's
FX-Series Liquid Cooler operates 0.9°C cooler at full fan speed and 5.9°C warmer
at slow fan speed.
Generally speaking, the AMD FX-Series Liquid Cooler
offers excellent stock fan speed performance, but is a bit starved for air when
the 120mm fans are dialed back to the minimum 800RPM. A better low noise speed
seems to be around the 1000-1200RPM level.

Monitoring
For those who read Frostytech frequently, you'll no
doubt have noticed that AMDs FX-Series Liquid Cooler is identical to the
Thermaltake Water 2.0 Pro watercooling solution. The two are indeed manufactured
by Asetek, use the same size heat exchanger and same design for copper
waterblock, etc. The two coolers are different in other ways; 1) AMD sprung for
better fans that rotate a bit quicker and drive more air through the heat
exchanger. 2) AMD have a bit of USB controlled electronics which permit fan
speed and lighting effects to be monitored by AMDs dashboard software, Chill
Control V. The software is beyond the scope of this review, but it's pretty
simple to use so a glance at the screenshots visible here will explain
everything.
The AMD heatsink monitoring software (CCV) reports
coolant temperature, pump speed, fan speed, and allows you to change the colour
of the illuminated AMD logo. In short, it's a slightly more elegant
approach.
While
Asetek are - once again - the engineers behind this self contained water
cooling system, AMD have put
together a very versatile liquid cooler for the FX-series processors. If you've
ever been disappointed by stock aluminum heatsinks, or don't wish to go down the
tower heatsink path, AMDs FX-Series Liquid Cooler is an excellent choice, though
a bit loud a full fan speed. Recommended.
