Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper
interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the
LGA1155/1156/775 version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature
results listed for each heatsink were calculated by determining the
rise over ambient temperatures at time of test. Information on

processors vary in power output so frostytech tests each heatsink with two
thermal loads that represent the upper limits of current cpu families; 150w and
85w. with a 150w heat load applied by the intel lga1155/1156/775 version of
frostytech's synthetic thermal test platform, the Zalman CNPS14X
heatsink is able to maintain a great temperature result of 17.4°C over ambient
at stock fan speed (1350RPM/48.7dBA). After decreasing the speed of its 120mm
fan to 950RPM, CPU die temperature increases slightly to 20.2°C over ambient
while noise output drops to 41.0dBA.
In the optional three fan
configuration with two user-suppled 140mm fans on either end of the CNPS14X
heatsink, temperature results improve by roughly 2-4°C over the stock cooler
results. With a 150W heat load applied, the CNPS14X heatsink yields a
temperature result of 15.5°C over ambient at full fan speed
(1350RPM/1350RPM/1350RPM) and 16.6°C over ambient at minimum fan speed
(900RPM/950RPM/900RPM).
Zalman's
CNPS14X heatsink was then tested with an 85W heat load. Under this test scenario
the CNPS14X cooler was able to maintain a very good temperature result of 10.5°C
over ambient at stock fan speed and 11.5°C over ambient at reduced fan speed.
For the 85W heat load in the
three fan configuration, the CNPS14X heatsink yields a result of 9.1°C over
ambient at full fan speed (1350RPM/1350RPM/1350RPM) and 10.0°C over ambient at
minimum fan speed (900RPM/950RPM/900RPM). At this reduced heat load the
difference between one and three fans is ~1.5°C.
Ultimately, the 157mm tall Zalman CNPS14X offers very good thermal
performance among the sub-set of sub-157mm tall heatsinks in Frostytech's
heatsink reference charts. The only heatsinks offering both
quieter & cooler performance are the Zalman CNPS12X, Noctua NH-C14
and Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme. As the heatsink reference
charts indicate, the CNPS14X isn't handicapped significantly when its fan
speed is dialed back, you may as well enjoy the quiet!
