Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper
interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the
LGA1155/1156/775 version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature
results listed for each heatsink were calculated by determining the
rise over ambient temperatures at time of test. Information on

Intel processors vary in power output so FrostyTech tests each heatsink with two thermal loads that represent the upper limits of current CPU families; 150W and 85W.
With a 150W heat load applied by the Intel LGA1155/1156/775 version of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform, the Xigmatek Dark
Knight SD1283 Night Hawk Ed. heatsink maintains an excellent temperature test result of just 14.3°C over ambient at stock fan speed (53.0dBA noise).
After decreasing the speed of heatsinks' 120mm fan to 1000RPM, CPU
die temperature increases to 19.3°C over ambient for the same 150W heat load.
Xigmatek's Dark Knight SD1283 Night Hawk Ed. heatsink was next tested with an 85W heat load. Under this test scenario the Xigmatek's CPU cooler was able to maintain a very good temperature result of just 8.2°C over ambient at stock fan speed and 11.0°C over ambient at reduced fan speed.
To sum up, the 159mm tall Xigmatek
Dark Knight SD1283 Night Hawk Ed. heatsink offers great thermal performance on both
the AMD and Intel synthetic thermal test platforms at full fan speed. It's a few degrees cooler at full fan speed than the previous '1283 model heatsinks (here, here, here) Xigmatek released. However because the stock fans are also slightly different Frostytech is unable to say exactly what impact the 'ceramic thermal coating' had in improving cooling performance.
This was
a tricky heatsink review to put together, but I hope the reader will appreciate
the lengths Frostytech went to to validate the manufacturers claims regarding
the Dark Knight SD1283's "ceramic surface coating", and not simply reiterate
marketing talking points without challenging them. Due to a lack of specific
information regarding the 'ceramic coating', Frostytech can't comment on it's
thermal performance one way or the other. Xigmatek's Dark Knight
SD1283 Night Hawk Ed. heatsink did
perform a few degrees better than previous SD1283 model heatsinks from the
Xigmatek stables. But, whether that comes down to the coating, or the coating
and the fan, or the just the fan, is impossible for us to accurately say.
Ultimately, the Xigmatek Dark Knight SD1283 Night Hawk Ed. offers very good to excellent thermal
performance at stock fan speeds.
