Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper
interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the
LGA1155/1156/775 version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature
results listed for each heatsink were calculated by determining the
rise over ambient temperatures at time of test. Information on

cpus range in power output so frostytech tests each heatsink with two thermal
loads that represent the upper limits of current processor families; 150w and
85w. with a 150w heat load applied by the intel lga1155/1156/775 version of
frostytech's synthetic thermal test platform, the Zalman CNPS9900DF
heatsink maintains a very good temperature result of 19.0°C over ambient at
stock fan speeds (1000/1400RPM, 48.1 dBA noise).
After
decreasing the speed of the center 135mm fan from 1400RPM to 900RPM, CPU die
temperature increased slightly to 20.4°C over ambient for the same 150W heat
load. Noise output for this test scenario fell to 43.0 dBA. The front 120mm fan
operates at a fixed speed of 1000RPM, you'll recall.
Zalman's
CNPS9900DF heatsink was next tested with an 85W heat load. With this moderate
heat load the Zalman CNPS9900DF cooler had no difficulty maintaining a very good
test temperature of 10.8°C over ambient at stock fan speeds and 11.6°C over
ambient with the center fan operating at reduced speed.
So how
does the Zalman CNPS9900DF heatsink stack up? On the whole, very well. In the
AMD thermal chart it's about 5°C off the best performing heatsink we've tested
so far. In the Intel thermal chart, the CNPS9900DF is about 7°C off the best
liquid cooling solution thus tested.
Since
Frostytech's heatsink reference charts are getting pretty long, it's hard to
draw comparisons between the CNPS9900DF cooler and 281
other Intel heatsinks - let's break things down by height as
well.
Where sub-160mm tall, 2-to-3 fan equipped heatsinks are
concerned, the Zalman CNPS9900DF is a few degrees behind the Zalman CNPS12x,
Sunbeamtech Twister 120, CNPS14X, Noctua NH-C14 and Thermax Eclipse II.
Generally speaking, it brings up the middle in terms of noise output.
If we
look only at sub-154mm tall heatsinks, the Zalman CNPS9900DF heatsink offers
very good to better-than-average cooling performance, about 5°C off the best air
cooled heatsink in this subset. Recommended for lower noise cooling situations.
