Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper
interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the
LGA775/1156 version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results
listed for each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise
over ambient temperatures at time of test. Information on

The heat output
from Intel processors varies, so Frostytech tests with two thermal values that
represent the upper limits of existing CPU families. With a 150W heat load
applied by the Intel version of
FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform first, the Thermaltake Frio Extreme
heatsink maintained an excellent temperature result of just 15.1°C over ambient
with both 140mm fans operating at full speed (1800RPM / 58.2dBA noise).
After
slowing both fans to 1200RPM (51.6 dBA), the 1230 gram twin tower Thermaltake
Frio Extreme heatsink held temperatures steady at 15.9°C over ambient - a
difference of under a degree. Clearly, the heatsink is optimized for lower fan
speed with its massive vaneaxial fans!
Thermaltake's Frio Extreme heatsink was then tested on the
Frostytech Mrk.II synthetic thermal test platform with an 85W heat load. In the
85W heat load test, the Thermaltake Frio Extreme was able to maintain a
temperature result of just 8.9°C over ambient with both fans operating at full
speed and 9.6°C over ambient with both fans slowed to minimum RPM.
Generally speaking, the Thermaltake Frio Extreme
heatsink is an excellent-to-very good thermal solution on both Intel & AMD
platforms. As we saw hardly any drop in thermal performance when the large 140mm
fans were slowed to 1200RPM, it's best to run the heatsink in this manner and
even up the operational footprint against similarly performing, slightly
quieter, twin-tower heatsinks.
It's a big cooler by any definition, so measure out from
the center of the processor to ensure it will fit with your hardware.
