Pentium 4 / Celeron class heatsinks tested at 85W
Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper
interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the
LGA775/1156 version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results
listed for each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise
over ambient temperatures at time of test. Information on

The heat output
from Intel processors varies, so Frostytech tests with two thermal values that
represent the upper limits of existing CPU families; 150W and 85W.
With a
150W heat load applied by the Intel LGA1155/1156/775 version of FrostyTech's
synthetic thermal test platform, the Noctua NH-L12 heatsink maintains a good
result of 20.7°C over ambient with both fans operating at full speed (44.7dBA
noise).
Dropping
the speed of the 120mm top and 92mm bottom fan to 1200RPM and 1300RPM,
respectively, caused CPU die temperature to increase to 22.1°C over ambient
while noise output fell to a relatively quiet 41.3 dBA.
Noctua's
NH-L12 heatsink was then tested on the Frostytech Mrk.II synthetic thermal test
platform with an 85W heat load. In this test scenario the NH-L12 heatsink
yielded a test temperature of 12.2°C over ambient at full fan speed and 13.4°C
over ambient at reduced fan speed.
Removing the Top Fan
Noctua's
NH-L12 heatsink will also work with only its bottom 92mm fan attached; so with
the 92mm running at stock speed (1300RPM) and the 120mm fan set aside Frostytech
applied a 150W heat load. Under these test conditions the NH-L12 heatsink
yielded a temperature of 27.0°C over ambient (44.7 dBA) at stock fan speed and
32.9°C over ambient (33.1 dBA) at the 92mm fans' lowest speed (1300RPM).
The Noctua NH-L12 heatsink was then tested with an 85W
heat load. Under these single-fan test conditions the NH-L12 heatsink had no
problem maintaining a temperature of 16.3°C over ambient at full fan speed and
19.4°C over ambient at reduced fan speed.
Conclusions
The Noctua NH-L12 is an interesting
heatsink that comes with 120mm and 92mm fans; it's short 93mm height makes it
ideal for many computer cases where tall tower heatsinks can't go. If there's
really not a lot of space above the CPU socket, users can remove the top 120mm
fan and decrease the height of the NH-L12 heatsink to only 66mm. There is a
pretty significant temperature penalty to doing this, particularly with 150W TDP
environments, but if you're dealing with a sub-95W TDP CPUs and the Noctua
NH-L12 will prove quite capable.
Where
sub-95mm tall heatsinks are concerned, the Noctua NH-L12 (with both fans) is at
the top of the list, followed closely by the Coolermaster Gemin II S. Where
sub-75mm tall heatsinks are considered, the NH-L12 ranks about 5°C behind the
Zalman CNPS8900 Extreme. Bottom line, the Noctua NH-L12 heatsink is a very good
lower profile heatsink.
