Abstract: The Deepcool Ice Wind Pro heatsink stands 157mm tall and 86mm deep - most tower coolers are more boxy in profile and this can make them interfere with tall memory modules on some motherboards.

Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

Deepcool's Ice Wind Pro heatsink ships with a 120mm PWM fan that draws power from a standard 4-pin fan header. The 157mm tall heatsink has four 6mm diameter copper heatpipes that pass through the aluminum fins in an ~80mm long straight row. Each heatpipe is 5mm from the previous. The aluminum fins measure 0.4mm thick and are spaced 2.0mm apart. The bottom-most fin is elevated 47mm above the base for motherboard clearance.

The four 6mm diameter copper heat pipes are swaged into the aluminum base plate in such a way that the center-most heatpipes intersect the fins farthest from the center. The heatpipes pass through the fins in a straight row, 79mm across. The fan is held on with springy wire fan clips that are easy to install, four rubber pads prevent rattling between the fan and aluminum fins. From the center of CPU to the outside edge of the fan frame is 55mm, if your wondering about tall memory module clearance.

The aluminum and exposed heatpipe base of the Ice Wind Pro heatsink measures 46x42mm in size. The aluminum support plate for the mounting brackets is a good 11.5mm thick. Looking at the top of the heatsink we can more clearly see how Deepcool engineers have configured all four heatpipes in a row, spaced just 10mm apart on center.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineers straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axis.

The exposed heatpipe base of the Deepcool Ice Wind Pro heatsink is machined razor smooth and has a surface roughness of ~8 microinches. According to the straight edge the base is perfectly flat in both axis. Excellent!
